Couldn’t agree more. The tariff thing made me queasy. While there could have been a way to flip the tariff thing on its head and create a tariff free group of nations which might have grown with time, that wasn’t the aim, Sure, call it a Bessentian surcharge if you wish, but it is a tax passed on to consumers. Instead, it was applied to let government pick winners and losers in an effort to “reshore industry.”. Last time I checked, picking winners and losers is best left to the market! Centrally planned economies are doomed ultimately. If you enter a business and require government subsidies and maybe even insulation from liabilities resulting from your products, it’s not a viable business.
