I appreciated the opportunity to speak at the Economic Freedom of North America conference at the Bridwell Institute at SMU. There were fantastic discussions about how states can improve economic freedom and what benefits this brings to people, including prosperity.

Let’s dive into this week’s updates.

Highlights

  • Federal Reserve cuts its target interest rate. My take is this is a bad move, which I shared on NTD News:

  • Price signals, not price gouging

    • Check out my article at Mackinac Center on how price gouging doesn’t exist. The real problem is government failure!

  • Dr. Rand Paul Introduces Six Penny Plan to Balance the Federal Budget in Five Years

    • “Unsustainable federal spending is driving the bloated national debt and contributes to economic weakness and elevated inflation, so I applaud Senator Paul’s Six Penny Plan to get control of the spending crisis,” said Vance Ginn, Ph.D, President of Ginn Economic Consulting and former Chief Economist of Trump White House OMB.

  • Tariffs ‘Protect’ Insiders, While Americans Pay the Price (see AIER article)

  • Home buyers grow skittish ahead of election uncertainty

What I’m Reading

  • Economic Freedom: What Is It? How Is It Measured? And How Does It Affect Our Lives?

  • What is the impact of immigrants on the budget?

  • Weak jobs report

    • The August jobs report showed only 142,000 new jobs, missing expectations of 160,000. Major revisions for June and July dropped previous totals by 86,000 jobs. The unemployment rate was 4.2%, and average weekly earnings increased by 3.7%, but real wages have declined since January 2021.

I interviewed John Hendrickson, the Policy Director for Iowans for Tax Relief Foundation, to discuss the importance of the U.S. Constitution, the debate over trade protectionism, the pro-growth policies in Iowa, and the pros and cons of the “New Right.”
